Greater Shepparton City Council is finalising designs of the Strategic Cycling Corridors, which aim to provide a safe commuter and recreational network for cyclists while connecting the railway station with key locations across the city, such as Victoria Park Lake and the Greater Shepparton Secondary College.
Council has been working on the plans since 2018, but updated guidelines in the state government’s Victorian Cycling Strategy 2018-2028, as well as development of the GSSC and Shepparton Art Museum, have forced changes to the designs.
“Shepparton’s railway station will receive more patrons with the introduction of nine return services and new VLocity trains. Given this, council wants to provide better pedestrian and cycling connectivity to and from the station to key landmarks across Shepparton,” Mayor Kim O’Keeffe said.
“The Strategic Cycling Corridors will provide infrastructure that will support pedestrians, and commuter and recreational cycling along these dedicated routes. I am looking forward to the feedback and input from the community regarding this project.”
Council said the draft designs provided for both on- and off-road connections along Hayes St, Baker St, Purcell St, St Georges Rd, Thompson St and Railway Pde, but would result in the removal of some on-street car parks.
Public consultation opens today (Friday, April 1) and closes on Monday, May 2. Final designs will be prepared in mid-2022.
