But the COVID-19 pandemic has proven to be Superman’s Achilles heel in any title defence plans they had.
On October 7, Southern 80 organisers confirmed the 2021 race would not go ahead.
It has left McGuire and his team feeling empty.
“We were getting really excited about the event,” he said.
“The idea of the Southern 80 going ahead in February gave us something to look forward to. This year’s race was pretty much the last thing we were able to compete in.
“We will definitely be back in 2022 to defend our title.”
McGuire said restrictions in place meant the team wasn't able to hit the water too often in recent months.
“The new season isn’t starting until July 2021 now so we’re going to be waiting a while,” he said.
“Hopefully the situation does continue to improve so we can get out on the water.
“We all love competing and we’re already looking forward to the first event.”
