The club has revealed it is having trouble filling an under-17s side for the Picola season, which gets underway at the end of March.
To aid in recruitment of younger players, and in an effort to celebrate Blighty Football Netball Club’s 75th year, thirds coach Jarrod Andrews said the club is offering free registration for all junior players.
“We know that many families are going through a bit of a hard time lately, and we want our club to support them during that time,” Andrews said.
“At Blighty, we pride ourselves on being a club that doesn’t push high expectations.
“We promote kids coming down and just having a go.”
Club executive member Paul Walters said the club is also looking at other options which makes access easier for younger players.
“We’re also looking into transportation options for our players,” he said.
“Given the location of Blighty, it can be challenging for several players to get to the away games and even home games.
“We’re working on what we can do there.
“The club is looking to create a safe and welcoming environment for all players, no matter their skill level.
Blighty is not the only district club to express difficultly in fielding enough players.
He said it seems to be a problem for smaller communities in particular, whose facilities are located out of town.
“The low numbers can be due to several factors that affect players coming to the club,” Andrews said.
“Location, costs, and different interests affect our numbers, and we want to change that this year”
Walters said the Redeyes are also seeking more community support in 2024, with coaching, umpiring and other roles needing to be filled.
