Echuca RSL president Denis Shanahan and vice president Fred Clarke have sat down with the Campaspe Shire Council to work out a replacement strategy for the wall.
The wall was one of the focal points of the precinct before it was taken down in September 2019 after shire engineers reported it was unstable and had poor foundations.
The plaques which adorned it are being safely stored until the replacement wall is completed.
Mr Shanahan said a whole-of-community effort was required to get the project fast tracked and completed.
“As the memorial wall is on council land, which belongs to the citizens of Echuca, the Echuca RSL is merely the custodian of the wall and cenotaph and we must work with the shire to get the rebuild done,” Mr Shanahan said.
Campaspe Shire general manager of community Keith Oberin confirmed discussions with the RSL had been held.
“Initial talks have been held with Mr Shanahan and a range of options discussed,” Mr Oberin said.
“He undertook to relay those options to his members and would come back to us when ready.”
While the matter is urgent for the RSL, Mr Shanahan asked members – and the public – for some patience.
“Please note, this is a significant project we want to get right this time, so it will not happen overnight,” he added.
