Disqualified driver drives to court to face disqualified driving charge

A man who was disqualified from driving was caught driving himself to court to face charges - which included driving while disqualified.

Police intercepted a 36-year-old man with several addresses, including Echuca and Kyabram, driving around Echuca on Tuesday.

A police car deployed as part of Operation Sentinel - the name given to the heightened border control campaign to stop residents of red and orange COVID-19 zones in NSW entering Victoria - ran a number plate check of his car.

Police followed the man after the plate check revealed the owner of the vehicle was unlicensed. Police waited for the driver to find a park before taking any action.

When the vehicle parked out the front of the Echuca courthouse, officers found the driver - the 36-year-old man - had three counts of bail to appear at court on Tuesday, and his licence was suspended.

When questioned, he admitted to police he was appearing at court for driving while suspended, but said he wasn't aware his licence was still suspended.

The 36-year-old will be summonsed to appear at court in relation to this matter and his car was impounded for 30 days.
