Now, he is living his dream working as a general practitioner at Echuca Medical Centre where he has worked for the past several years.
Dr Ram made the move to Echuca, after studying a Fellowship at the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.
“Moving to Australia has helped me to go on to have a successful career,” Dr Ram said.
“During my studies it was heavily noted there was a shortage of doctors in rural areas and I thought moving to Echuca was a great way to give back to my new home
“I've loved every moment here, I share a great relationship with all my patients and the staff.”
While the 40-year-old is loving the regional medical life, he is now hoping to train the next generation of doctors who could arrive in the twin towns.
“Young doctors need to work with a mentor who has completed a fellowship so that is where I think I can help people,” Dr Ram said.
“Rural areas are always looking for new doctors to help meet the needs of the local community.
“And I want to be able to combine that with a new E-consultation pathway which will involve doctors and specialists from larger cities such as Melbourne and Sydney.
“If we can achieve those goals, it will create much better access to medical facilities to people who may have to travel long distances.”
Dr Ram isn't just looking to make an impact in his adopted home either, as he aims to establish several charities in his native Pakistan.
“I'm currently in the process of helping to develop plans for small hospitals in the country's regional areas,” he said.
“Compared to the Australian health system, Pakistan still has a lot of development which can occur.
“And these charities will only help with that process.”
