The innovative and fully biodegradable cups, made by company Good Edi, will be sold at Beechworth Bakery.
This initiative is part of Beechworth Bakery’s commitment to support Earth Day on Friday, April 22.
Customers wanting their coffee fix on the day will be offered the chance to purchase an edible cup for just $1 extra, which will go towards the planting of two trees.
“One hundred per cent of the proceeds will go towards tree planting with a company called the Tree Project,” Beechworth Bakery employee Bec Bachelor said.
“The company as a whole wanted to get behind an environmentally conscious initiative that supports a waste-free lifestyle.”
Ms Bachelor said the project was a first-ever trial for Echuca’s Beechworth Bakery.
“This is an introduction for us to see whether this is something that could be a recurring annual option for our bakery and our customers.
“We are looking to see if people are interested in the initiative, whether customers get behind it and how could we support it going forward.
“If there is great success in it and we get a lot of positive feedback, then we will potentially be able to look at doing it in an ongoing capacity.”
Ms Bachelor said she was excited to see how the community responds.
“It's just something different. It’s a little bit of fun for both us and our customers.”
The cups stay crispy for 40 minutes, won’t leak for eight hours and don’t change the flavour of your coffee.
When you finish your coffee, simply eat your cup, pop it in your compost or throw it in the bin — it will break down naturally without any composting equipment in less than two weeks, quicker than a banana skin.
