Mr Neville’s fiancée talked with him about the Walk for Epilepsy initiative, an annual event, after seeing it on the news, and he decided to sign up immediately.
“I just signed up there and then and donated a bit of money. I sent it to 30 family and friends and, all of a sudden, I started getting donation after donation,” he said.
He has raised more than $2700 so far, which is far more than he initially expected.
“I didn’t think I’d get $500, so I’m just surprised that I’ve gotten as much as I’ve got.”
Mr Neville has been diagnosed with epilepsy and had his second ever seizure in August this year.
While aiming to walk 4km a day, he has purposely decided not to plan in any other way to represent what it’s like living with the condition.
“You don’t get to have any preparation when you can have an epileptic fit,” he said.
The Epilepsy Foundation, one of six organisations collaborating on the walk, said while 1 per cent of Australians currently live with epilepsy, one in 25 will be diagnosed with the illness at some point in their lives.
The Walk for Epilepsy begins on Tuesday, October 1, and raises funds for epilepsy support services, education and training, and research.
