Organiser and St Mary’s Primary School teacher Alex Daly said thanks to the generous donations from several businesses, more than 500 lunches had been distributed to vulnerable students last week.
“Students normally have access to the school breakfast clubs and sandwiches, and because this isn't happening at the moment we still wanted to make sure they could have access to a healthy lunch,” she said.
As her parents own Moama’s Border Inn, Alex got the hotel on board as well as Moama Bakery to supply the bread, Pear Tree and Forever Fresh to donate fruit, Cadell and IGA Xpress Echuca to provide snacks and Lactalis Echuca to supply dairy products.
“They have been amazing, giving everything to us for free while they’re also struggling during these difficult times,” Alex said.
“We’ve had lots of staff from the Border Inn volunteering their time to make the lunches and packaging them.”
Lunches are collected by St Mary’s, Echuca 208, Twin Rivers and Moama Public primary schools, and Echuca College and Echuca Specialist School on Mondays and Wednesdays and distributed to students in need.
“We'll keep doing this until school goes back,” Alex said.
“Schools and families have been grateful.”
She was hoping other businesses would come on board to support the project.
“We don't want to put added pressure on businesses at the moment but anything they could provide, whether it is money or food, would be much appreciated.”
