But the week of the Echuca-Moama Multisport Weekend has arrived.
This weekend will see competitors take to the Murray and surrounding areas in junior and senior triathlons and the Wharf to Winery swim.
Race director Shane Kervin said the triathlon club was excited the event had arrived.
"There's a great feeling around because we never knew what was going to happen,” he said.
"With the environment of the past 12 months, even though we were confident the race would go ahead, there was always uncertainty.
"So many races were cancelled last year due to the virus, so the fact we are able to go ahead now is a fantastic outcome."
Less than a week out, registration numbers for the event are incredibly high.
"We aren't having on-the-day entrants due to our COVID requirements,” he said.
"And we are capping entrants, so we have been promoting early entry to people and as a result our numbers are well up on last year.
"We typically get a lot of entrants in the final week before the competition, so we will see if that continues. If we get the same number in this final week as we usually do we are looking at hitting our cap."
The junior triathlon will take place around the Moama Beach Reserve, while the Wharf to Winery event will begin at the onion patch and end at Morrisons Winery and Restaurant.
But one change has been made to the senior event, with the starting point moved from the bridge to the onion patch.
"Due to our COVID regulations the race needs to start in waves,” Kervin said.
"Due to the bank it wasn't going to work to start at the bridge like we normally do, so we have shifted the start further down the river."
Kervin said he hoped the event could be a win for the community after a tough 2020.
"We will have people from outside of town taking part,” he said.
"Hopefully they stay a while, spend a bit of money in town and contribute a bit to our economy.
"It's been a long year, hopefully this event can be something big for Echuca-Moama."
