Campaspe Highway Patrol acting Senior Sergeant Ian Brooks said motorists should pay extra attention around schools and crossings where the 40km/h speed limit applied.
“The first group of kids, including preps and seniors, will go back first so drivers need to be wary,” he said.
“Young kids don’t have good road sense and as some of them will be excited by being back to school they may not be concentrating on the roads. That’s why drivers need to exercise responsibility and vigilance around schools.
“The volumes of traffic will increase over the next few weeks, so it’s high time people doing the wrong thing on the road pull their heads in because they can put the lives of kids at risk.”
Roads, Road Safety and the TAC Minister Jaala Pulford said while school would look different this term, school zone speed limits remained.
“We urge motorists to be patient, to stick to the school speed zone limits and take extra care when driving around schools and allow students to cross the road safely,” she said.
