Their first order of business was to get on the tools and construct planter boxes from recycled pallets.
Echuca 208 parent Shane Howe said he came up with the idea while completing the Fairley Leadership Program, a year-long course designed to establish leaders in the community.
As part of the program, Shane was required to develop his own community-based project and couldn’t look past an opportunity to help his local school.
“It’s a program for kids that are not super interested about the reading and writing aspects of school, so it gives them another interest,” he said.
“If you can give them something other than just a book and a pen to apply what they’ve already been learning at school, I think that will only result in a positive outcome.
“It gives the school an opportunity to interact with the broader community as well.”
After getting the go-ahead from 208, Shane said he contacted Bunnings Warehouse Echuca to see if they could contribute resources.
“Bunnings were very helpful… they donated all of the tools as well as their time,” he said.
And now he plans on doing a new project with the school every week, and wants to encourage other communities across Echuca-Moama to join In.
“There might be some parents and grandparents that want to get involved that will get something out of interacting with the kids,” he said.
“We’ll take all the help we can get.”
