Under the lockdown, pubs and bars can continue to operate for takeaway while sit-down meals or drinks are not allowed.
But Pastoral Hotel owner Trevor Andrews says he has kept his doors open throughout lockdowns in the past 18 months, and this time he’s publicising it.
“We’ve had people in the bar here the whole time,” he said.
“This is the fifth time they’re locking us down. Someone needs to step up and make a stand to let the government know that this is wrong.
“I’m sick of this crap. It’s unlawful, illegal and it’s against our constitution.”
A Facebook post by Mr Andrews on Saturday, and reposted by the pub’s page, with his decision to remain open through the lockdown has received hundreds of messages of support, as well as some backlash.
He said the COVID-19 restrictions were hypocritical, with stores such as supermarkets, pharmacists and service stations allowed to operate while small business owners were “going to the wall”.
“They’re corporate giants. Why are they allowed to be open when small business can’t,” he said.
“You get 50-100 people in Woolworths at any one time. What’s the difference with me having 20 people in here and serving them a meal?
“People are walking in there to buy food. Why can’t they come in here and have a beer?”
He said his phone had been running hot with people reaching out in support and even making donations.
“I had a sheila from Queensland saying she’s donating to the cause. She said ‘put some meals on the bar on me and pay it forward’,” Mr Andrews said.
Throughout the pandemic, Mr Andrews hasn’t had to put any staff off, buoyed by the bottle shop and takeaway side of the business.
He said the support from locals had been fantastic, with the pub delivering 70 meals on Saturday night alone.
