The walk will be held on Sunday, March 3, at 10am. It will start from the radio station’s office and go to East Echuca Recreational Reserve. The path is roughly 730 meters.
Myeloma is a type of blood cancer that develops from plasma in the bone marrow. There is currently no cure, but there are treatments that drastically slow down the disease’s spread.
Eight-five per cent of patients will survive for a year or more after diagnosis. Fifty-five per cent will survive for five years or more, and 30 per cent will survive for 10 years or more after diagnosis.
The campaign comes after a former presenter at EMFM lost his battle with myeloma recently.
“We have a couple of staff members and past presenters who have myeloma; unfortunately, one of our own recently passed away due to complications from the disease,” John Vincent, the sponsorship volunteer at EMFM, said.
“He was very dear to all of us, so this cause is close to our hearts.”
The ‘My Greatest Walk’ initiative is Australia-wide, with 22 walks on March 3.
Mr Vincent says the aim isn’t just to raise money.
“We want to raise awareness too; it’s not a well-known disease. If people can participate, It’ll be a great way to get to know some people battling it and support them,”
“It’s to let those struggling with myeloma that they aren’t alone,” he said.
If you wish to participate in the walk or donate, you can register at the EMFM website.
