With some encouragement, she persuaded local residents to donate to Stand up for Cancer campaign. All it cost her was her hair.
And thanks to the generosity of the local community, she managed to raise more than $1700.
On Thursday, October 26, she had her head shaved in the patio section of the Violet Town Cafe as a group of supporters cheered her on.
“I lost my grandmother to cancer and many friends as well, and it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time but only just got the guts to do it this year,” Anne said.
“I was going to dye it, but then changed my mind and decided to shave it to get more people interested.”
And her shave was well planned to coincide with the start of the warmer weather.
“One of the local businesses, she’s moved to Alexandra now, but she’s going to send me some hats to wear, so I’ll be good even when it’s cold,” Anne said.
“And I’ve got my bandana, so I’ll be good.”
Anne said she was not nervous at all despite the fact she had never had her head shaved before.
“No nerves, I’ve been looking forward to it,” she said.
“But I do hope it grows back quickly.”
Anne raised money through direct donations to Canteen and the local businesses provided items for a raffle.
“I’d like to thank the local community, especially the local businesses,” she said.
“And a special shout out to Gary and Lou here at the cafe because they have just been absolutely fantastic. Thank you all.”
