As Victoria heads towards a COVID-19 normal, the government's funding boost will support almost 100,000 children in getting back out on the field, court and pitch.
The funding, which will be split into two stages, does not start until next year and eligibility details will be revealed in the coming months.
The first stage of the funding — titled Get Active Kids Program — will see $21 million worth of $200 vouchers delivered to help families cover the cost of uniforms, equipment and memberships.
“Every child deserves the chance to be active and healthy — but especially after this year — and these vouchers will help families afford the sports their kids love,” Community Sport Minister Ros Spence said.
The next stage will be dedicated to Victorian schools as part of the Active Schools program, with nearly $13 million to be allocated to more than 500 schools.
It was revealed 481 government schools would receive $7 million in support to meet the costs of running outdoor education and after school programs, including forming partnerships with local clubs.
And $5.7 million will be used for a further 96 schools to introduce a whole school approach to physical activity.
The remaining funds will be used to implement on-the-ground advice and support to more than 800 schools from a team of physical education leaders.
Meanwhile, technology will be used to explore how it can assist in getting teenagers moving and sitting less.
All schools will gain access to information on how to get more children active via the new Active Schools Toolkit.
“We know taking part in physical activity from a young age helps develop lifelong healthy habits,” Health Minister Martin Foley said.
“It’s a wonderful initiative to support so many school kids becoming active by walking, riding or scootering to school.”
