A garden club has been established with the aim of bringing residents together while supplementing the house’s food program.
House manager Rob Foran said the initiative encouraged residents of all ages to come together, learn from each other and contribute to a greener, more sustainable neighbourhood.
“Like most seeds you plant, the garden club has started small, with three house members forming a plan on how to maintain garden beds Echuca-Moama Apex, Echuca-Moama Plant Farm and Rock Solid Garden Supplies have provided us,” he said.
“At the same time they have been sharing — and seeking — ideas as to how the garden could be more vibrant with flowers and art.’’
Gardening tips and tricks have been coming from people who have called in and seen what is happening, with some members offering cuttings as well as advice and volunteering their time to help make the garden the community’s own.
“The vision for the community garden is to create a shared space where Crossenvale residents can access fresh produce from a beautiful place where they can picnic every day, while fostering community connections and learning for members,” Mr Foran said.
Members were surveyed about programs they would like to see the house provide, and a community garden was the resounding favourite.
Mr Foran said garden club was a wonderful way to bring people together and meet that need.
“While the garden itself is already taking shape, the potential for new friendships, learning and sharing is what will be the true measure of its success,” he said.
While the club is still in its infancy, members are already planning to host workshops, planting days and seasonal events.
Meanwhile, a roster has been produced for watering outside of hours and to ensure the coming heat does not get the best of the plants.
