Sutcliffe won his first division title in the event in 2001 and was able to double his tally with a 25-20 win against rising East Shepparton star Connor Trewren in this year’s decider.
Spectators at Stanhope Bowls Club were treated to a ripping final, with Sutcliffe getting out to a solid lead before his young adversary began to reel him in.
But in the end Sutcliffe’s experience — he has 13 club singles championships in the trophy cabinet — and metronomic accuracy across four bowls was enough for the veteran to claim a five-shot victory.
‘‘It was pretty tight, I got a bit of a break, but he caught right back up,’’ Sutcliffe said.
‘‘They were all tight heads, it was a close game.
‘‘I always think I’m a chance (playing singles), but you’ve got to play well and I think I played pretty well on the day.
‘‘I had a good run across the two Sundays of the finals, I was happy with my form.
‘‘You don’t want to go all the way to the final and be a bridesmaid — and I have been the bridesmaid before — so it was good to get this one under the belt, it was my turn again.
‘‘I felt sorry for Connor because he did so well to get there, but he’s got plenty of time left to get one.
‘‘He’s 19 years of age and knocked off a lot of good players to get to the final.
‘‘I’m probably getting towards the end of my career and he’s just getting started.’’
Sutcliffe had defeated Tallygaroopna’s Lindsay Muston in the semi-final on Sunday after getting through Tatura’s Josh LeSueur and Violet Town’s Graham Jones on the previous day of play.
Trewren’s run to the final included wins against Nagambie’s Greg Brack, Hill Top’s Lee Farrell and Stanhope’s Shane Walsh.
●The women’s Champion of Champions singles event has been rescheduled due to extreme conditions.
The event will take place at Mooroopna Bowls Club on February 20 and 21.
Initially the games were moved to twilight fixtures at Shepparton Park, but that plan also went by the wayside when hot weather followed the competition once more.
It means any players who withdrew after the first rescheduling can put their hand up to play again through the GVBD midweek match committee.
