While Kyabram cannot be compared directly to other towns due to population sizes and different parking restrictions, council said about 3704 parking fines were issued in Echuca since the start of the 2020/21 financial year.
About 10 parking fines were issued in Rochester over the same period.
“Turnover of car parking spaces assists more shoppers to park as close as possible to their destination,” council community general manager Keith Oberin said.
“Local retailers want the car parks available to ensure their customers can park and then shop in the local area.“Streets with time-restricted parking are regularly monitored by Local Laws staff on a random basis.”
Council did not supply details to the Free Press of how the number of fines compared to previous years, despite being asked on three occasions.
The Free Press was told "staff resources are fully engaged with their core responsibilities".
Council also did not answer a question about how much revenue the fines had generated; however, council said the minimum fine was $80 if paid before the due date.
By the Free Press's calculations, combining the fines issued in Echuca, Kyabram and Rochester with the minimum amount, the money collected comes to more than $300,000.
