Guardians of the region’s heritage elect new leadership team

**Newly elected:** Deputy chairperson George Ferguson, secretary Marjorie Earl and chairperson Geoffrey Maynard will lead the Greater Shepparton Heritage Advisory Committee in 2022-2023.

The body charged with providing expert heritage advice to Greater Shepparton City Council has elected its leadership team for the 2022-2023 year.

Geoffrey Maynard, from the Shepparton Heritage Centre, will chair the Greater Shepparton Heritage Advisory Committee with George Ferguson, of the Tatura and District Historical Society, to be his deputy, and Marjorie Earl, from the Katandra and District History Group, the committee’s secretary.

The committee advises council on cultural heritage and conservation issues. It also promotes the region’s unique historical legacy, raises awareness and encourages the conservation and preservation of significant heritage places, objects and knowledge.

The committee’s other roles include organising the Greater Shepparton Heritage Open Days and assessing applications for the Greater Shepparton Heritage Conservation Grants Program.

In 2023, the committee plans to launch the Greater Shepparton Heritage Plaques Pilot Program, which would see significant places identified with blue plaques and a short description of their significance.

“The committee has an important role to play in the cultural heritage space, and council is fortunate to have such a knowledgeable group of members to take on this role,” Mayor Shane Sali said.

“Greater Shepparton’s history is distinctive and diverse, reflecting all of the buildings, places and stories important to our community.”
