While anyone can get influenza, people with medical conditions including heart, kidney and liver disease, chronic lung conditions and diabetes may be at higher risk of needing hospital care.
Senior Manager Primary Care Engagement Andrew Heap said having a plan is one of the simple precautions you can take to help protect yourself and stop the spread of flu.
“Your first priority is always to get a flu shot with your GP or pharmacist and be up to date with your COVID vaccinations,” Mr Heap said.
“It’s also important to talk to your GP and make a plan before you get sick.
“Make sure you have an adequate supply of your regular medications. You might like to store up some frozen meals and food for your pets, and have someone on standby to help out at home in case you become unwell and require hospitalisation.”
Practising healthy habits is another easy way to help stay safe and out of hospital during the flu season. As best you can, keep away from people who are unwell, avoid crowded indoor spaces, wash your hands often, use hand sanitizer, and keep frequently touched surfaces clean, especially if people in the area have been sick.
“If you start to experience symptoms like fever, cough, body aches, headache and fatigue, please contact your GP straight away and start following your health plan,” Mr Heap said.
