Built in 1915, the heritage-listed tower is a landmark for the town, requiring continual inspections, maintenance and repairs.
General manager operations Julian Bull thanked Echuca residents for their patience as work at the site continued.
“These works are essential to ensure continuity of supply, as the tower performs a crucial role in Echuca’s water supply network,’’ he said.
During a routine inspection, loose concrete render on the exterior of the tower was found, with the material crumbling from the structure.
“While carrying out this work is a slow process, we need to preserve the historic integrity of the structure and proceed with the appropriate care and diligence a job like this requires,’’ Mr Bull said.
People will notice activity at the site over the coming months, with temporary fencing in place, and there will be one planned road lane closure on Pakenham St, Echuca in coming weeks, for a few days.
Water supply will not be impacted by these works and remains safe to drink.
Assessments on the tower will continue, as Coliban Water develops a long-term plan for the tower and the site.
