Man's body found in Murray River at Echuca

"It has been reported to the coroner, an autopsy will follow and an ID to be confirmed through DNA, teeth or tattoos," he said.

6.45PM, March 27: POLICE are calling for information from the public after finding a man's body in the Murray River today.

Murray River Police District Inspector Paul Huggett said the man had not been identified.

"We don't know his age and there are no distinguishing features," he said.

"We will do an ID and then try to backtrack his movements."

Insp. Huggett couldn't say whether the death is suspicious.

"We can't speculate. It could be misadventure, it could be foul play, we just don't know," he said.

"We're pushing for information, as to whether anyone is missing."

EARLIER: AN ECHUCA man who thought he could see a blow-up toy trapped in a fallen tree on the Murray this morning was stunned to discover it was a man’s body.

The Wharparilla Drive resident was alerted by people on a passing houseboat, who called out to him they thought it was a body.

But with a brightly coloured inflatable toy trapped in the same branches since Southern 80 weekend in February, Tim Denahy thought it would be the same.

"I walked down to the beach and across the logs to see what it was," he said.

"I just thought it would be another blow-up doll or toy because they're always on the river. But when I got about 3-4m of it, I told them 'you better ring the police'.

"I still wasn't 100 per cent sure because I've never seen a dead body before."

Mr Denahy said he believed the body wouldn't have been out there long because his friend owned the houseboat which was being maintained earlier this week."It had work done to it on Monday and no-one saw anything then," he said.A crime scene has been established and detectives from Murray River Police District are investigating.

Murray River Police District Inspector Paul Huggett said the man's identity was still unknown.

"The investigation is progressing," he said.
