Men accused over Echuca boat heist have court cases adjourned

TWO Echuca men facing charges stemming from the alleged theft of more than $700,000 worth of boats and cars and earlier this year have had their cases adjourned.

The matters of Brett Spits, 37, and Lincoln Mifsud, 44, were heard in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, when they were both adjourned until later this year.

The court heard Mr Mifsud will face court again on November 30 for a contested committal hearing, where the accused’s lawyer is expected to cross-examine the police informant.

Mr Mifsud is facing five charges, including handling stolen goods in relation to four Wakesetter boats and one count of dealing with proceeds of crime which relates to a Jayco caravan.

Mr Spits’ lawyer Zarah Garde-Wilson appeared in court via video link on Tuesday requesting her client’s matter be adjourned until September 22 for a further committal mention.

Ms Garde-Wilson told the court she was still waiting to receive some CCTV footage in relation to the alleged incidents.

Mr Spits is facing 13 charges, including the theft of two Easytow boat trailers, each worth $5000, and two Wakesetters, each valued at $130,000.

He was also charged with two counts of dealing with proceeds of crime relating to $9800 worth of cash and a Jayco caravan.

Both the accused have been on bail since their arrest on February 28.

No pleas were entered.
