The team climbed 28 flights of stairs wearing complete kit for the Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb at Crown Metropol, finishing first on the fundraising leaderboard with $30,454.
The event raised much-needed funds for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation, Lifeline and the 000 Foundation to support cancer research and crisis support for members of emergency services and their families.
Members from Seymour, Hilldene, Broadford and Clonbinane fire brigades trained together to complete the event, which was held on September 2.
The team spent four months training hard with Adam Griffiths from BFT Seymour. Adam’s tough sessions certainly paid off as everyone completed the climb, with times ranging from six minutes to 23 minutes.
Only one team member had previously completed the climb.
It was Christian O’Shea’s first time doing the climb, training and fundraising.
“I’m glad to say that next year I will be doing it again to try and improve my time of 23 minutes and 9 seconds,” he said.
“I undertook this not just as a personal challenge but also climbed in memory of my mother who passed away from breast cancer and my two uncles that also succumbed to cancer.”
The team dedicated its ascent to a fellow local firefighter who suffered a stroke 10 weeks ago while responding to a fire call.
Mitchell Shire Group CFA Stair Climb team would like to thank its sponsors: BFT Seymour, Kylie Comte Tattoo, CasCap Allied Health Services, Pro Turf, Australian Warfighter Coffee, JDM Services and Get BruceTed Printing. Thanks also to everyone who donated.
