In the council meeting on Tuesday, August 25, councillors approved for staff to amend the Murray Local Environmental Plan 2011 to allow the site to be used.
The construction of a new police station in Moama has been on the cards for years after the existing building fell into disrepair.
In April this year, the NSW Government announced $4.5 million for the new station.
Councillor Tom Weyrich said it had been 20 years in the making.
“Moama has needed a much larger police station for a long time,” he said.
“It finally looks like it’s going to bear fruit.”
He also called for an urgent review into police numbers in the area.
Cr Campbell said the community wanted and needed the police station.
“If nothing else, we should be looking after our local police officers and this whole area should be an emergency department precinct,” she said.
Senior town planner Llyan Smith, who wrote the report to council, said the new site was selected based on its “accessible and central location to Moama’s expanding township”.
The site, known as ‘Lawry Park’, is also home to the Rural Fire Service station, and has been closed to the public since March this year due to the new bridge and intersection works.
The development of the new police station will be subject to the determination of a future development application.
