Norman Berger, of Mathoura, is running for the Greater Murray ward. He has lived in the Murray River Council area for 24 years.
He is running for council because he hopes to make a difference in the community. Mr Berger also wants to ensure council stays within its core business.
“(I am) driven by a strong commitment to enhancing our towns,” he said.
Some of the areas that he would prioritise if he were elected include rates, as well as issues that impact seniors. He aims to make older residents aware of health programs available to them.
Conservation of green spaces is also important to Mr Berger, and he wants parks and gardens to be protected by council.
He hopes that wildlife in Murray River Council will continue to live in these areas, as well as the native river red gums.
“(Parks and gardens) are like endangered species, and once they are gone, we have lost them forever,” he said.
He aims to make himself available to listen to the concerns of the public, acting on their behalf and delivering their issues to council.
He believes he would make decisions that would benefit the community if he were to be elected.
Mr Berger feels that his experience in managing clubs and commercial venues will equip him for the role of being a councillor. He has also served on various boards and committees.
This includes assisting the Mathoura Steering Committee with the Mathoura Rural Transaction Centre.
He has also volunteered for more than 17 years with the NSW SES.
Some of the aspects that he loves most about living in Murray River Council area are the people and the river red gum national parks and forests.
Mr Berger also loves the waterways and believes the region is a wonderful environment.
