Council chose to release its Australia Day awards almost two weeks before presentation ceremonies will be held.
Citizen of the Year is Moulamein firefighter Alan Fielding, while Katelyn Eddy from Mathoura has been given the honour of Young Citizen of the Year for the council area.
Fellow Mathoura-ite Connor ‘CJ’ Wilson was named Young Sportsperson of the Year after a stellar 12 months in athletics, and his favoured shot put in particular.
Senior Sportsperson of the Year was Heath Moloney of Moulamein, and the Moulamein Automotive Club Inc is being celebrated as Community Group of the Year.
The Community Event of the Year was awarded to Run Echuca Moama and the Arts and Culture award will go to Echuca Moama Theatre Company.
The award recipients will be presented with their award at local Australia Day breakfasts on January 26.
Alan has been recognised for his outstanding contribution to the local area, most notably Moulamein and surrounds.
He moved to Moulamein just seven years ago from Sydney, but in that short time, he has become an integral part of the community, giving tirelessly of his time and skills.
One of the first organisations Alan joined was the local fire brigade and road crash rescue unit.
“Through his dedication, he trained and qualified for both units and now proudly serves as the president of the Moulamein Rural Fire Service,” his citation reads.
“Beyond his leadership, Alan is a driving force behind the local Australia Day celebrations, organising the event over recent years.
“Alan’s contributions don’t stop there. He is an active member of the Moulamein Men’s Shed, where he helps organise the battery collection program to fund stocking our rivers with fish fingerlings.
“The Men’s Shed, under Alan’s involvement, also creates incredible red gum furniture and undertakes countless community projects that benefit the town and district.
“As a board member of the Moulamein Bowling Club, he not only provides governance but also steps in as a driver for the courtesy bus whenever needed.
“He also works for Home Support, driving buses to ensure residents can attend medical appointments outside the district.
“Whether it’s transporting locals to Swan Hill for shopping or co-ordinating the Wakool Express Community Bus, Alan ensures that everyone in our region has access to essential services.”
In his ‘spare time’, Alan channels his creativity into crafting wooden toys.
“Like a modern-day Geppetto, he makes beautifully handcrafted toys labelled ‘No Battery Required’,” his nominees shared with the awards’ judges.
“Every cent of the proceeds is donated to the Moulamein Public School P&C and the Breakfast Club, ensuring the next generation of kids has the resources they need.”
Alan and his wife, Sue, also contribute by running the barbecue at the local ConFest.
All profits from their hard work go to various organisations in town, with any leftover food donated to the RFS.
“Alan’s selflessness, creativity and unwavering dedication to Moulamein exemplify the very essence of community spirit,” his citation reads.
“He has made a lasting impact on so many lives and truly embodies what it means to give back.”
Katelyn has been recognised as Young Citizen of the Year for her remarkable contributions and achievements, both at school and within the Mathoura community.
At just 12 years old, she is already an outstanding role model, excelling academically, athletically and as a leader.
“In the classroom, Katelyn is a dedicated and focused student who approaches her studies with enthusiasm and persistence,” her citation reads.
“She not only strives to achieve her best but also supports and encourages her peers, embodying the values of the school: respect, responsibility, and resilience.
“As one of the school’s captains, Katelyn has proven to be a natural leader, always ensuring that every student feels included and valued.
“She has gone above and beyond to engage with younger students, offering guidance and support, including being a wonderful buddy to two Kindergarten students.”
On the sporting field, Katelyn’s dedication and talent shine brightly.
She has represented her school and the Riverina region at state level in athletics, cross-country and swimming.
She competed in the district netball competition and triumphed in the open division of the Sweat Vs Steam 5km running event in Echuca.
“Katelyn is not only committed to achieving her personal best but also inspires and motivates others with her encouragement and team spirit,” her citation reads.
“But Katelyn’s leadership extends beyond sports and academics.
“She played a key role in securing a $10,000 grant for Mathoura Public School by writing a successful application to Australian Grain Technologies, showcasing her initiative and commitment to improving school resources.
“In the community, Katelyn’s contributions are equally remarkable. She confidently spoke at the town’s Anzac Day Commemorative Service and represented her school on Remembrance Day, laying a wreath and performing with the choir.
“Her willingness to step up in such meaningful ways highlights her maturity.
“Katelyn Eddy is an inspiring young citizen who exemplifies kindness, determination and a commitment to excellence in all she does. She is a shining example of the bright future of our community.”
Murray River Council Mayor John Harvie congratulated the award recipients and nominees.
“On behalf of council, I would like to acknowledge all the nominees and congratulate this year’s award winners, who are a shining example of how we can all have a positive and lasting impact in our community,” he said.
“From community volunteering, community events, sporting achievement and artistic offerings, this year’s awards reflect the vast and varied contributions from across our area.
“It is their efforts that add to the story of Murray River Council and make it such a great place to live.”
