Tradespeople have been laying fibre optic cable to homes and businesses across parts of town.
Federal Communications Minister Michelle Rowland announced the suite of upgrades towards regional Australia.
“The Albanese Government’s $2.4 billion investment will enable the NBN’s full potential,” Ms Rowland said.
“We’re giving Australian families and small businesses access to the world-class broadband infrastructure they deserve.
“Our investment in full-fibre NBN will see up to 90 per cent of premises in the fixed line footprint able to access world-class gigabit download speeds by 2025.”
Echuca Moama Committee chief executive officer Chris Janson spoke to The Riv on the importance of upgrades for the community and how it will deliver greater speeds to the region.
“With improved connectivity to the internet, businesses can provide a better customer experience which in turn allows them, and therefore the region, to grow,” Mr Janson said.
“NBN connectivity to the region has allowed more people to stay connected which has facilitated things like flexible working environments and better collaboration between teams working remotely.”
While the modernised roll-out is expected to support 85 per cent of the Australian population, the remaining 15 per cent will have improved access to the Sky Muster system, with an increase of service capacity to customers from midnight to 4am.
The previous maximum capacity by Sky Muster was from midnight to 8am.
Australia is now ranked 65th regarding the quality of the internet, but still behind countries such as Trinidad and Tobago, and Bulgaria.
The local works were recently carried out by Ventia, a large multi-service company that delivers on services such as the NBN.
It means Australians can and should expect to have access to world-leading internet speeds to keep us connected, resilient, and globally competitive.
