I remember those times I was giving three days spiritual retreat with the graduating students at the university.
One of the questions I raised with them for reflection is “What do you want to achieve in life?”.
Unanimously they shared “they want to become successful in life”.
I was happy to hear that they want to become successful people in the future, but sadness came to me, it seems nobody wants to serve the Lord.
It seems service to the Lord is the least among their plans.
I was thinking why it is hard to serve the Lord.
Some young people always say, “I will serve the Lord when I grow old or when I become successful”.
But I tell you, many of them died of old age not even thinking of serving the Lord.
That same question I would like to impart to you today - what do you want to achieve in life?
Maybe you will say, “I am still young” or “I am old”.
What do you consider your perfect happiness in life? Your money? Your career? All of them will pass away.
What have you contributed to attaining perfect happiness? You may say, “what I am doing now is for the Lord”.
But is it really for the Lord or to preserve yourself?
Christian vocation is about love and servanthood. These two are inseparable.
But to be able to love and serve God we need humility, not to demean or harm our self-wellbeing and feelings, but to free us from selfishness.
For all these years, we have been serving ourselves.
Maybe it’s time now to invest for your life in heaven.
It is not yet too late, though life is too short to live.
Don’t wait for the day you don’t have enough time to do it.
Always remember our greatness is in the Lord. Don’t waste your time, make the best of it.
