The expo will see representatives from the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre giving an hour-long presentation about the process for applying for tertiary education, followed by presentations from universities.
Beth Crossman and Jacq Campbell have invited local senior students and parents to attend the event as a “one-stop shop” for tertiary education.
“A few years ago, we went to the Tertiary Information Sessions that was usually hosted by schools, and I approached one of the organisers and suggested if they were arriving the night before, why not host an expo at night for parents,” Mrs Crossman said.
“I invited the universities, and then took it one step further and asked VTAC to come and do a presentation for parents — and they said yes.”
The first careers event was a smashing success, and VTAC was excited to return to another large event the following year.
“(VTAC) go to all the big places like Melbourne and Bendigo and Shepparton, but they didn’t do them anywhere else, and then we had more than 300 people attend,” Mrs Crossman said.
“They were so excited by the turnout that they came back the next year, and they still had over 300 parents, whereas at Bendigo they only had about 50.”
The event allows parents to get the most up-to-date information about the tertiary application process first hand — not by way of teachers or their own students.
“It’s the parents’ opportunity to talk about the whole process and the Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS); it’s an opportunity to speak with the universities, and find out about courses,” Mrs Crossman said.
“Parents are getting the answers too, because often they don’t hear the information.
“It’s a great opportunity and they don’t have to travel anywhere.”
The Careers/VTAC Expo will be held at Rich River Golf Club’s Tatalia Room on Wednesday, July 20, from 5pm to 8pm and is open for all local schools, students and their parents.
Representatives from Melbourne University, Monash University, Australian National University, La Trobe University, Deakin University, Deakin College, Federation University, RMIT, Victoria University, University of Tasmania, JMC Acamedy, Bendigo Kangan TAFE, William Angliss Longerong TAFE, Wodonga TAFE, Swinburne University, Charles Sturt University, Academy of Interactive Entertainment, Collarts, and the Photography Studies College will be in attendance at the event.
