Pass at 40
Police are urging motorists to help keep them safe by passing emergency vehicles at 40km/h. The ‘new’ road rule was introduced back on July 1, 2017, but some drivers are still not slowing down when passing emergency vehicles. The slow to 40 km/h road rule applies to both directions of traffic (unless divided by a median strip) when approaching and passing stationary or slow-moving emergency vehicles when their flashing lights are activated.
By passing at 40 km/h you increase the safety of first responders, as it is the maximum speed at which pedestrians are likely to survive vehicle impact.
