The Port of Echuca is rallying behind the Flanno for a Farmer fundraiser this August, aiming to lend a hand to Aussie farmers.

The cause seeks to raise awareness around farmers' mental health and provide support to their families during challenging times.

This initiative resonates strongly with the port given its historical connection to the agricultural community.

Port of Echuca chief executive Mark Francis emphasised the importance of farmers in Australia, especially in the local community.

‘’Farmers are the backbone of this country,’’ Mr Francis said.

‘’We have a special connection to the farming community because of Echuca’s roots. Back in the day, riverboats were the lifeline between remote areas and Echuca wharf, transporting wool, wheat and all sorts of produce to the wharf.

‘’We’re really excited to get behind this cause and give something back to the community that has been such an integral part of our story.’’

From August 23 to 25, the Port of Echuca team will be donning flannel shirts in a show of solidarity.

Any visitors sporting a flannel who buy a paddlesteamer ticket or a guided tour ticket during this time will have $5 from their purchase donated directly to the cause.

Those popping in to the free Port of Echuca Discovery Centre can also make a donation through the Museum Donation Box until August 25, with all proceeds to go towards the initiative.

On Friday, the Echuca-Moama Kiwanis Club will also be holding a barbecue at 11am outside the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre to raise money for the cause.
