Major flooding is expected in Shepparton-Mooroopna tonight and is also expected imminently in Murchison.
People will need to be prepared to leave if directed or if they feel unsafe, and are encouraged to check on their elderly neighbours and family so they’re aware of what’s happening and can receive assistance if required.
Pre-filled sandbags are available at Kialla Recreation Reserve and Mooroopna Recreation Reserve. Lines will be long, so people will need to be prepared to wait.
The McIntosh Centre at the Shepparton Showgrounds will be open from 2pm today as an emergency relief centre.
Before leaving your home it is advised that you turn off your gas and electricity, take your mobile phone, charger, medications, clothes, pets and important documents with you, check road closures and follow instructions from emergency services.
It is also recommended that each household have an emergency kit ready to go, which should include:
– Battery powered radio
– Torches
– A supply of batteries (in multiple sizes)
– Device chargers (solar-powered and standard)
– Mobile phone
– Food: basic staples that don’t require heating or cooling
– Bottled water
– Warm, waterproof clothing and shoes
– Spare medication and prescriptions
– First aid kit
– Pet essentials
– Cash and a printed copy of your emergency plan (RediPlan)
– Sleeping bags and pillows
– Blow-up mattresses
– Things to keep kids occupied
Pets such as cats must be contained in cages, boxes or crates, and people need to be prepared to set up their pets in their car.
