The safety of a key Rushworth road has come under question after community concerns were raised by a local politician.
On October 31, Victorian Roads and Road Safety Minister Melissa Horne confirmed the Department of Transport and Planning would undertake a speed review of Moora Rd in Rushworth.
Voicing community concerns, state Member for Northern Victoria Rikkie-Lee Tyrrell raised the issue of road safety near a school zone during an October 17 parliamentary question time.
Mrs Tyrrell said the 60km/h speed limit on Moora Rd posed a risk to children walking to and from Rushworth P-12 College on the adjacent School St.
As a main thoroughfare in Rushworth, Moora Rd links to the CBD on High St and forms part of the C345 Bendigo-Murchison Rd, a truck route connecting to Bendigo.
Ms Horne said the department was undertaking a speed zone review along Moora Rd, including an evaluation of the need for a school time-based speed zone, which would “consider the introduction” of a 40km/h speed zone at the school crossing near School St.
The government will engage with Campaspe Shire Council and relevant stakeholders to review the speed zone.
The review is expected to be completed in the coming months.
