Over the course of last year’s holiday season, Echuca Police Station received a large volume of reports relating to thefts in the area.
A spokesperson from the station said they wanted to remind those on holiday that they were not exempt from being a victim of crime.
“You may go on holidays, but offenders don’t. Secure it, or you may lose it,” they said.
Crimes can and do occur at caravan parks, resorts, motels and other holiday hotspots, they said.
The spokesperson said it was important to lock vehicles, caravans, boats and bikes, and to secure any valuables while on holidays, just as you would at home.
To prevent theft from vehicles, Victoria Police recommend removing all valuable items, locking all doors and closing all windows, and parking in a well-lit, secure area.
GPS and dash-cam units, documents with addresses or identity information, and house or garage keys should be removed from vehicles.
Caravans and trailers should be parked securely when in use, stored securely when not in use, and onboard property protected by securing valuables and documenting items.
Bicycles should be secured with a good quality lock, identified with a unique and personal code, and insured against theft or damage.
If a theft is taking place, Victoria Police does not recommend confronting the offender or interfering with the scene.
Information on registration, brand and model, distinguishing features and serial or model numbers is required for reporting thefts to police.
Victoria Police flyers on theft from motor vehicles, caravan and trailer safety, and bicycle theft are available at the Echuca Visitor Information Centre.
