Made up of Goulburn Valley products Charlie Bowmaker, Winton Findlay, Tobi Oladele and James Cowling, the now Melbourne-based psych-pop band has welcomed the launch of its first EP.
Mr Bowmaker said the release was “really exciting” for the group.
“It’s good to finally have it out in the world,” he said.
“It’s been a long time coming, we pretty much finished it in 2019 but I think initially we were still very new to the idea of releasing music.
“Then COVID happened and we were like, let’s just take a breather, because we wouldn’t have been able to promote it how we wanted to, which is through playing shows.”
Fittingly, the group broke into the music scene in July of 2020, with a cover of Joy Division’s Isolation.
Since then, the Shepparton exports have found themselves performing around Melbourne, including a sell-out show at The Evelyn Hotel for hit single Lazy Boy.
“There's such a rich support network in the music community in Melbourne,” Mr Bowmaker said.
“Which has definitely just made us realise more-so that a career in the music industry is a viable option, maybe more than it was painted when we were growing up.”
Hailing from rural Victoria and completing their secondary years at Goulburn Valley Grammar School, each band member has gone on to study music in Melbourne.
“It was initially a big change for us, we did used to do some gigging in a cover band in high school,” Mr Bowmaker said.
“The country music scene is a little bit harsher, there’s not as much of a crowd in the area to support amateur live music, but it was a great experience and good exposure to a relatively difficult music scene.”
The new EP highlights the group’s unique sound, with psychedelic pop and electronic elements emerging.
While the COVID-19 pandemic has been exceptionally challenging for the music industry, the band is looking forward to getting back out into the music scene.
Next year is shaping up to be a big one with Ocean Grove’s Lockhart Music Festival locked in for January 2022, live shows for the EP launch to be confirmed and a new body of work in the mix.
“We're now at a point where we're getting very excited to tour next year, and even hopefully play some shows in Shepparton,” Mr Bowmaker said.
