More than 3700 people have been killed and thousands more injured, with the death toll expected to rise as rescuers search through mounds of rubble from toppled buildings.
Member of Shepparton’s Turkish community and Ethnic Council of Shepparton and District worker Betul Tuna said the expressions of support from the community had been “overwhelming”.
“The amount of people reaching out from the Shepparton community sending their thoughts and prayers has been quite beautiful,” Ms Tuna said.
“We always appreciate living in this area, as a multicultural community we’re aware of how these events affect people right around the world.
“It’s beautiful that this side of humanity shines, we appreciate everyone reaching out and the support has been overwhelming.”
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Tuesday Australia would provide an initial $10 million in humanitarian aid to those affected through Red Cross partners and humanitarian agencies.
As fundraising efforts commence, Ms Tuna warned members of the community to exercise caution and to be wary of fraudulent fundraising efforts on social media.
“Be cautious about sending funds across, look for government websites rather than random social media posts by someone saying they’re collecting funds unless you know them or have dealt with them before,” Ms Tuna said.
“In regards to getting funds straight to the source, go through official organisations or local NGOs based in the cities affected.
“There is an official emergency response and government bodies already have donation and fundraising channels in place; if I was to donate today, that’s where I would be donating.”
Ms Tuna said the Turkish community would meet Tuesday evening to discuss fundraising efforts alongside local youth groups.
