Biplanes and turbo jets alike will be roaring overheard, with brilliant aerobatics stunts set to wow — just on a small scale.
The 41st annual Mammoth Scale Fly-In, hosted by Valley Radio Flyers Shepparton, will see over 100 model aircraft take off in one of the biggest meetings of its kind in Australia.
Club secretary Warren Smith said crowds would be treated to some of the best model planes the country had to offer, with modellers travelling from far and wide to display their machines, some of which cost more than a new car.
“(Spectators) will see some of the best model aircraft in the country,” he said.
“They’re all giant scale, so they’re all very large models, ranging from early civil to modern civil to warbirds and even real turbine jets.
“(Some models) actually run a miniature turbine jet engine, and some of the models range from probably a starting value of seven or eight thousand dollars right up to $50,000.”
Not only are the planes of amazing quality, but the pilots are too, with some of the aerobatics displays they are capable of putting on still stunning even the most seasoned model aircraft enthusiasts.
“If you look at old biplanes and things, they generally just chug around, (but) large-scale aerobatic planes do some incredible stunts,” Mr Smith said.
“We have some of the best fliers in the country come to the event, and some of the things they can do with them — I'm a flyer myself, but they just astound me, they are really incredible to watch.
“So it's the whole spectrum from quiet flying around to full-on aerobatics and high-speed stuff with the jets, and it’s quite spectacular actually.”
The event, which will be held at 935 Kerrs Rd, Karramomus, will see planes in the air between 10am and 4pm across the weekend of September 21 and 22, and costs just $5 for spectator entry with kids under 14 free.
