The class of 2022 chose to forego their end-of-year celebrations and instead decided to pick up their shovels and protect the twin towns from the impending floods.
Finding strength in numbers, the students selflessly gave up their time to preserve their homes and the homes of their loved ones.
Graduating St Joe’s Year 12 student and house leader Greer Thomson said the students had no regrets about rolling up their sleeves and securing the town.
“We knew that there were bigger things to worry about than us not being able to celebrate,” Ms Thomson said.
“But there was still a sense of disappointment.
“Now it feels almost surreal to be able to celebrate and have some normalcy restored in our lives.”
Fellow Year 12 student and house leader Cleo Oberin echoed Ms Thomson’s sentiments, saying it was nice to be able to step back, take a breath and finally take in all that they had accomplished through the pandemic and the floods.
“We were all in it together and we all understood each other’s struggles,” she said.
“But it’s a relief to be able to enjoy this moment.”
