The mercury inched its way to 13.9 degrees as a cold front swept across south-eastern Australia.
That figure was 2.3 degrees below our previous coolest of the year on Thursday, May 4.
It was also our coldest day for six months, stretching back to Melbourne Cup Day (November 1, 2022).
But the cool start to May has not set any new records.
Echuca’s record coldest day in May came in the Olympic year, 2000, when we hit a “high” of 8.1 degrees.
At the other end of the spectrum, frosty starts are also a key feature of this time of year.
Our coldest start to the day came on Wednesday with a minimum of 1.6 degrees, surpassing the previous low of 2.5 degrees on Monday, May 8.
Wednesday was our coldest morning since August 21, 2022.
Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Simon Timcke said that the twin towns had experienced far coldest starts than this.
“In Echuca the record lowest minimum temperature in May is — 1.9 degrees on May 31, 2002,” he said.
“The lowest-ever minimum on record is -5.5 degrees on July 21, 1982.”
The good news is we’re in for some warmer temperatures in the coming days.
The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast a high of 20 degrees on Friday and Saturday, and a maximum of 21 on Sunday.
