The group began in 2022 through the support of volunteers from Echuca Moama Uniting Church.
Since December 2023, Anglicare Victoria has been managing the group.
Anglicare Victoria early help practitioner Kristy Beaumont facilitated the sessions, providing a space for local grandparents who are raising their grandchildren.
“For many people, grand-parenting means a weekend together sometimes, an afternoon play date, an evening babysitting, a summer holiday, or chats on the phone,” she said.
“But when life circumstances change for some parents, often grandparents will assume full or part-time responsibility for their grandchildren, with minimal support provided.”
The Grandparents Supporting Grandchildren Group offers a chance to share stories, seek advice, and connect with others in a supportive environment.
“The group provides grandparents a supportive and confidential space where they can gather, listen and be heard by others with shared experiences,” Ms Beaumont said.
“Hearing from others who share a similar journey can help both uplift your spirits and give you concrete suggestions for your situation.”
The group has 12 members, with five or six regularly attending the monthly events.
Some have been attending for a few months, while others have been part of the group for about a year and a half.
“It’s just rampant, looking after the grandkids,” group member Lisa Breeden said.
“It’s your kids that are the problem, and that’s really worrisome. That middle generation is not doing what they’re meant to do ... or they’re suffering themselves.
“It’s not easy.”
Group members have formed friendships together, with some meeting outside the sessions for walks and coffee despite not knowing each other before joining.
The group welcomes new members and will meet next at Fuzion Café on Wednesday, July 31 at 9.30am.
