Mugabi Ahsley Achilleo:
“I am an immigrant from Uganda.
My previous skill was audio production.
I had started some community-based organisations looking to improve the wellbeing of minorities (sexually diverse, women and children) within the community.
Joining the social work degree was something that perhaps seemed unachievable for me until one day I took a Briggs and Myers test out of curiosity.
My score informed my choice (with some support in between) to take this career path.
You can be a proponent for allowing people their own power through their own self-determination.
Everyone needs a calling to drive their passion.
If this is your passion, the program will be good for you.“
Tarmara Flanagan:
“My background is in hairdressing from 14-years-old, and at 32, I entered university after completing a cert IV in community services.
Social work goes hand in hand with hairdressing, it’s sort of like informal counselling.
So many people come in while in crisis or grieving.
It’s a safe space.
I have lived experience of trauma and have always loved being with people, having deep and meaningful conversations, and hearing their stories and experiences.
I have a passion for helping people, and this put me on my path to work within the service sector.
I entered into social work due to my passion for people’s behaviour and what life event or experience makes the person behave the way they do.
I have a genuine curiosity.
The program removes a lot of barriers.
La Trobe is extremely supportive, and it’s a fulfilling career path.
Give it a go.“
