Activities will include guided walking tours to the Captain’s Cottage and the site of the Maiden’s Punt and Inn, where you can hear about local legends and historic figures who lived in and around Moama, gain an understanding of how they lived, the events that affected their lives and the hardships they endured, including floods, fire, the depression of the 1890s, the riverboat trade and the punts.
The Echuca-Moama Family History Group will be providing free research into people’s past, even those who are not local, with only some minor details of grandparents or great-grandparents needed for a starting point.
The theme for this year’s festival is ‘curiosity’, which encourages the community to actively wonder, investigate and learn about natural and cultural heritage around our local area.
Chanter St was the original location for the town of Moama and still houses a number of buildings and sites that reflect the history of the area.
One is Maiden’s Punt and Inn, which was established by James Maiden, who in 1840 was the first person to colonise Moama.
The Friends of Old Moama and the Echuca-Moama Family History Group’s event will be held from 11am until 2pm on Sunday, May 1, in the historic Chanter St precinct.
