Their aim is to raise funds for the renovation of a second unit at RSL House. Kevin Phillips and Gary True, both aged 75, have served on the RSL House Committee for many years and are keen, together with 77-year-old Bruce Pigdon OAM, to walk to assist with the renovation cost of another unit.
The marathon starts at Corowa War Memorial and continues along the new walking path for 42 kms until the trio hopefully reach Mulwala War Memorial. All three are eager to prove age doesn’t mean exceptional achievements such as this, are out of the reach of grandads.
President of Yarrawonga Mulwala RSL Sub Branch, Gary Guidotti, praised the trio’s venture.
“RSL House has provided a comfortable home for local ‘diggers,’ and others, for decades and the units are in need of renovations for the benefit of our worthy residents,” he said.
“We are most thankful that these three sub branch members are showing such enthusiasm and initiative and wish them well in the challenge that they have taken on.”
The challenge will take place on Sunday, May 21 and is expected to finish at the Mulwala War Memorial by mid-afternoon. Donations will be gratefully received at ClubMulwala, Yarrawonga News and Gifts and Yarrawonga Ford.
Will Kevin, Gary and Bruce, fine examples of ‘Grandads Army’, make the distance?
