Murray River Police District western sectors Inspector Paul Huggett said that just after 4pm, a driver in a blue Ford sedan, with no registration plates, flew through the Victoria-NSW border checkpoint on the wrong side of the road at more than 100km/h without stopping for police.
“Police heard the roar of the engine and managed to get out of the way before the car sped past into NSW,” he said.
Police did not pursue the car for safety reasons, but were called to Line Rd, Moama, about 5.30pm following reports the vehicle had crashed head-first into a tree.
The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle — a 52-year-old woman — suffered a broken leg and head injuries.
The woman was freed from the vehicle by attending police and was stabilised by paramedics at the scene.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said she was flown by air ambulance helicopter to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition with upper and lower body injuries.
She remained in a critical condition on Tuesday, September 8.
Insp. Huggett said police were investigating.
“We’re awaiting toxicology results and are making inquiries into whether charges will be laid,” he said.
Inquiries are continuing and anyone with information is urged to contact police on 54820099 or Crime Stoppers on 1800333000.
It follows an accident in Echuca this morning where a man was hit by a concrete truck.
