For almost 20 years, the Deniliquin High School P&C in conjunction with the PDHPE Faculty at Deniliquin High School have organised a one-week intensive Driver Education Program for all Year 10 students which will run again next week starting from 9am Monday.
Jenny Fellows, a member of the Deniliquin Driver Education Program committee, said this year's program will again be full of plenty of activities.
“This year we have a special visitor amongst our annual special visitors, which is the ‘Steering the Future’ a travelling safety trailer.
“The week long program has many local volunteers involved, and we thank them in advance for their input throughout the week, a case in point of ‘it takes a village to raise a child’.
“We also would like to thank our visitors to town. Their contribution to the program is invaluable.
“The aim of the week is to educate our learner drivers so that they can make the right choices on our roads into the future.”
Scheduled for this week is the annual mock incident, as well as sessions on sharing the road (with Maritime, Bike Safety, Farm Safety, Heavy Vehicles, Transport NSW), agencies in road trauma, first aid, wellbeing, fatigue, personal safety and car maintenance.
The popular Deniliquin Sporting Car Club program will also run.
All participating students receive free driving lessons with Deni Driving Training on completion of the week’s course, thanks to funds raised through volunteering at the Ute Muster Breath Testing and Information Centre.
Financial support was also received from the committee behind the Deniliquin Truck Show & Industry Expo (supported by the Rotary Club of Deniliquin) to provide one extra driving lesson free of charge, with the proviso that a parent or carer must go in the car with the learner driver.
