Ask any of my high-school sport teachers, or really anyone who knew me ever.
Once I had to write a footy story for work and my editor laughed at me when he read it.
I am so into the arts, rather than sport, that I once told a friend to enjoy soccer rehearsals. I didn’t even realise why it was wrong.
But then I met this guy and I really liked him, and we’ve been together almost a year.
The only thing is, he’s a basketball player.
I liked this guy so much when we started dating that I not only went to all of his games, I learnt how to score them and did so at a few games.
But that was last season, and I’ve gone to a lot of his games since then. I still don’t really know what is going on.
I know you can only get one point from a free throw, and three-point shots are particularly useful.
I also know that my partner is very good at defence so instead of seeing him score, I tend to see him get fouled out.
However, I have found myself getting excited to watch his games every Monday night.
I actually enjoy them. Who would have thought?
I think he’s a good player and I know he enjoys it.
We drive there together. He pretends he doesn’t want water — I get him water anyway. He’s thankful about seven minutes into the game when he chugs it.
It’s a little routine we have, and I love routines.
I love him too, which has helped me enjoy the game.
I admit I still feel out of place. I mean, I’ve only ever clapped at concerts and musicals, but that style doesn’t seem appropriate.
I clap for too long. I think about five strong claps is appropriate but I’m still working on that.
I still hesitate to yell out because you don’t yell during performances.
But I am getting better.
I also want to shout out News journalist Jay Bryce and photographer Megan Fisher because their joint talent led to me enjoying consuming basketball content.
Jay’s campaign in The News, Stand for our Stadium, was really good. I read every page — and again, I hate sport.
I miss reading his pieces — but don’t tell him that.
Through Megan’s work on the upcoming Underdog documentary, I’ve been extra excited about a local team my partner isn’t even in.
On a side note: Listen to the Shepp Happens podcast to learn more about the documentary. Thanks!
Anyway, RIP my Monday nights and hello new hobby.
Also, to my partner, if you’re reading this: I know you only foul out to come sit with me the rest of the game — you can admit it.
