Campaspe Highway Patrol caught the drivers between Elmore and Torrumbarry on Friday, January 22, as part of the statewide Australia Day traffic operation.
Senior Constable Bren Lodi said it was disappointing to see so many motorists going over the speed limit in such a short time.
‘‘There were a few drivers who are looking at three months off the road,’’ he said.
‘‘Quite a number of them were high speeds, I think we had one doing about 130km/h, and many were towing caravans and boats.
‘‘And the roads they were caught on weren’t the best. They were back roads between Kotta and Lockington where agricultural vehicles are driving both ways.
‘‘These drivers were just focused on getting to their campsites as quick as possible.’’
Thankfully, Snr Constable Lodi said there were no collisions and no drunk drivers caught over the long weekend.
‘‘We had about two drug drivers over the weekend so overall that was pretty good for the amount of people we had in town.,” he said.
Over the river, Murray River Police District’s Acting Inspector Dave Foreland said police were also pleased with the behaviour of crowds in Moama.
“The majority of our community chose to do the right thing, and for that we are very grateful,” he said.
“At the end of the day, public safety is the primary concern for police and we are pleased to report no major incidents throughout Moama.”
