The man and woman awoke about 3am to find an intruder in their McKinlay St house.
Senior Constable Alisha Bortolotto of Echuca criminal investigation unit said the man broke in through the back door before confronting the couple.
‘‘That person has then run off once he realised the victims were there,’’ she said.
She said he didn’t have a weapon and no threats were made.
‘‘We are going through CCTV footage at the moment but we believe the male was wearing dark clothing, including a hoodie,’’ she said.
The couple’s neighbour Linda Thorneycroft made a post on Facebook about the burglary.
‘‘Someone just broke into my neighbour’s house and my neighbour had to defend himself and his wife,’’ she wrote.
‘‘I seen the guy jump my fence wearing a black hoodie with some pattern on the back.’’
Snr Constable Bortolotto is appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
‘‘We would also urge people to be aware of any suspicious people loitering around,’’ she said.
Anyone with information about the aggravated burglary can contact Echuca police on 5483 1500 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
